Dangerous Coats

Dangerous Coats
by Sharon Owens

Someone clever once said

Women were not allowed pockets

In case they carried leaflets

To spread sedition

Which means unrest

To you & me

A grandiose word

For common sense

Fairness

Kindness

Equality

So ladies, start sewing

Dangerous coats

Made of pockets & sedition

For the final major project of my MA in Costume Design for Performance, I was inspired by this poem to create a coat made of pockets and sedition.

The style was inspired by a coat worn by my Grampy, which was handed down to my mum - a 1930s raglan sleeve overcoat. The pockets were filled with banners supporting different causes I care deeply about, which have since been donated to the Chicago Protest Banner Lending Library.

I wear this coat with pride to this day.

Published works

After releasing my short film onto YouTube, academic Catherine Harper reached out and asked me to write about my Dangerous Coats project for the journal Textile: Cloth and Culture.

My work was featured on the cover, and stills from my short film were printed alongside my article about the project.

Since then, I have co-authored a chapter in Catherine's book The Stained and Bloodied Cloths of Ireland.

I hope to continue to work with Catherine on further meaningful projects in the future.
